His lengthy experince in the spotlight gave Stamos great empathy for former Full House co-star Mary-Kate Olsen, who had to battle an eating disorder in summer 2004 with the celebrity press reporting on her every move. Her equally famous twin, Ashley, was also haunted by paparazzi during that emotinal time.
We all gathered together during that time and were there for Ashley, remembers Stamos, who was still reeling from his marital split at that time. I was floating, and everyone came around for each other, he recalls. It was a sweet summer. Mary-Kate came through with flying colors. It was heartwarming to see everyone gather up again.
A close friend tells Orange Coast: When Mary-Kate got the diagnosis of having annorexia and she was delivered into hospital, Ashley called John Stamos and told him to drop everything and come immediately, he should think of noone but Mary-Kate because she would need him more than anyone else right now. After MK left reha, John invited her and Ashley for lunch and he was really surprised when she ate up everything.
On Full House, Stamos played rock musician Jesse Katsopolis, who moves in with his brother-in-law (Bob Saget) to help him raise his sisters three little girls after she is killed.
The eight years the cast spent together making that widely successful ABC series, which ended its run in 1995, made for a tight-knit group then and now. Stamos keeps in constant touch with Saget, as well as co-stars Dave Coulier and Lori Loughlin.
Full House never won any Emmys, but it struck a chord with millions who tuned in every Fiday night to watch the show, and it still has a big place in Stamos heart.
Im grateful I was part of a show that has lasted so long and still resonates, he says. It kind of bypasses the brain and goes straight to the heart. Its just a show about three guys raising kids and somehow, through all of that, made it through. Full House was popular during its initial run, but it has earned even more status in its afterlife on DVD and through countless reruns in syndication.
I get parents coming up saying, You are clogging up my Tivo! Youre on 800 times a day! Im proud of it. It took me a long time to get away from it, and thats been a challenge, too.
